Soysoy: style and influences

Magick-pop (electrad)

As opposed to most artists on the pop scene, Soysoy does not aim to fit within a particular genre. Therefore, their music has no definite style. Well, let's say that at present there is no 'scene' to which the trio could be linked to. Proud to be different!

Could we say that Soysoy has created a new style? Mmm... we would rather say that the band's project is a rich melting-pot.

However, depending on the tracks, listeners and people from the music sphere have linked Soysoy to the following genres: Adult Alternative Pop/Rock, Celtic Fusion, Worldbeat, Trad, Dream-Pop, Electronica, Progressive, Heavenly, Ambient, Post-Punk... all of this??? Sure...! (laughter).

Yet, it is unavoidable to escape being pigeonholed… so when still a duo, Soysoy defined itself as a 'magick-pop' band. The word 'magick' is evocative of the incantatory trait of Soysoy's more 'pagan' songs, as well as of the more atmospheric and ethereal side of other tracks. The word 'pop' is a way of underlining the band's accessibility, as well as its versatility.

The term 'electrad', which stems from the contraction of 'electro' and 'trad' (from 'traditionnal'), was recently added to Soysoy's definition when Sébastien joined the band, bringing along with him electronic programming. This new word also reflects Cécile's more and more frequent use of the violin, thus adding elements of traditional music to their songwriting (mainly nordic, from the Balkans and the Middle-East).

Among the genres mentioned above, the members of Soysoy feel closer to the following trends:  Worldbeat, Dream-Pop and Adult Alternative Pop/Rock

Influences

Soysoy's influences are too numerous to be mentioned here or to be explained, because they are not part of a particular 'history', unlike bands and artists which are part of a pre-defined scene.

We admire many artists from very different genres, from baroque music to avant-garde...

We will just mention artists or music genres whose style has probably influenced Soysoy more than others:
Stina Nordenstam, Blonde Redhead, Minimal Compact, Dead Can Dance, Collection d'Arnell-Andréa, Siouxsie & the Banshees, XTC, Nine inch nails, Värttinä, Kate Bush, Lisa Germano, Miranda Sex Garden, Cocteau Twins, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos, the B-52's, Killing Joke, Portishead, Gjallarhorn..
Baroque music (especially J.S. Bach, D. Buxtehude, Alessandro Scarlatti), traditional celtic, nordic, balkanic and middle-eastern music, noisy-pop, cold-wave, progressive rock, adult-oriented pop...
